The Group Celebrates Travel Companies With the Best Vegan Food, Compassionate Policies, Animal-Friendly Innovation, and More

London – As holidaymakers book their 2024 getaways, PETA has announced the return of its Travel Awards – a celebration of the travel providers, hotels, attractions, and other industry leaders that are meeting the skyrocketing demand for vegan travel that is kind to animals.

In categories recognising the best operators for vegan food, British Airways won the award for Best Airline for offering delicious plant-based fare across all travel classes, while Lumo nabbed Best Train Operator in recognition of its vegan-friendly menu, which boasts over 50% plant-based dishes. On the high seas, P&O Cruises was recognised as Best Cruise Line for the plant-led restaurant aboard its Arvia ship, and Wightlink won Best Ferry Operator in celebration of the array of vegan treats available on board.

When it comes to hotels, Beck Hall beat the competition and took home Best Vegan Luxury Hotel for its fully vegan bedding, toiletries, and food – including an impressive afternoon tea and à la carte menu – while Hilton Hotels & Resorts was awarded Best Hotel Chain for adding carbon footprint ratings to its menu – highlighting the lower impact of vegan foods – in nearly 30 of its UK-based hotels.

LNER paved the way for better trackside safety for animals with its AI-powered deer deterrent system designed to reduce injuries and deaths caused by train impact, earning the company the award for Best Innovation for Animals.

Newmarket Holidays includes among its Travel for Good initiatives a policy prohibiting animal-related activities on its tours, winning it Best Travel Company. The operator urges customers not to take harmful animal rides in Petra, where a PETA exposé revealed the routine whipping and beating of horses, donkeys, and camels. The interactive, animal-free BBC Earth Experience – which showcases an audio-visual feast of the best of Sir David Attenborough’s spectacular wildlife documentaries – picked up the award for Best Experience.

Hempsall Farm Luxury Vegan Glamping’s unique offerings – complete with an on-site double-decker bus pub – earned it the award for Best Vegan Glamping Experience.

“With 16% of British adults now eating meat-free, any company that’s not meeting the demand for animal-friendly travel is missing out,” says PETA Corporate Projects Manager Dr Carys Bennet. “All the winners of PETA’s Travel Awards prove that the future of tourism is free from exploitative exhibits and full of show-stopping vegan dining.”

PETA – whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way,” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview – offers tips for compassionate travel on its website.
